Amadeus has been identified as the supplier for the UK’s planned contactless biometric border-gate upgrade, with its Seamless Gates already operating at East Midlands Airport, according to Biometric Update’s report.
The reported change is operationally significant because returning UK passport holders would not need to place a passport on a reader in the normal flow. The document would be required only when additional checks are needed. Birmingham Airport is next in the rollout, followed by 11 other international airports; Amadeus says eGates covered by its long-term UK Home Office and Border Force contract will be upgraded by early 2027.
Amadeus describes Seamless Gate as a contactless biometric access product intended to identify travellers as they walk through a gate, with the gate product supported by its Seamless Journey Platform. The vendor says the system can be used across airport processes including border control, but those are Amadeus product claims, not an independent assessment of performance, accuracy or security in the UK deployment.
The deployment has clear eligibility limits. The initial process applies to returning UK passport holders, while the expansion to eligible foreign nationals remains a future plan. It is also not a blanket removal of document checks: Border Force can still require a passport when further scrutiny is necessary.
The supplied reporting does not disclose performance measures, biometric matching thresholds, retention practices, interoperability requirements, or the cost of upgrading each airport. Those gaps matter for buyers and oversight bodies evaluating whether a contactless passenger flow changes only the traveller interface or also the underlying identity-verification and data-governance model.
